We all know about Global Warming (well at least we should do by now), but are we doing everything we can when it comes to the garden?  Whether it's a rainwater butt or a space-saving composter, we gardeners should be leading the way in terms of environmental awareness and sustainability.  So what can we do?

Here is our Top 10 Checklist for Going Green in the Garden.

  1. Recycle rainwater for irrigation
  2. Establish a vegetable plot and Grow Your Own
  3. Encourage wildlife into your garden with insect-friendly plants, bird boxes and feeders,
  4. Don't buy or use peat based compost
  5. Garden organically to protect wildlife and water sources
  6. Take your own cuttings, or grow from seed (start swopping with neighbours and friends to increase your plant collections)
  7. Use solar power for greenhouse heating, pond pumps and outdoor lighting
  8. Reduce the need for watering by mulching beds and placing saucers under all plant pots
  9. Recycle as much as possible - establish a wormery, buy a compost bin and gather up leaf litter for next year's compost
  10. Turn unwanted household items into unusual planters - basins, drawers and old boots are great examples
